Review of Reality Bites (1994) by Carl S — 12 Apr 2010
This will always remind me of the 1992/3 era. Ethan Hawke is a bit TOO cool to be likeable here and his 2 novels represent him better; but this is a great slacker/generation X movie, way better than Singles of about the same time.
It's not until Richard Linklater's Suburbia did we see anything more realistic and cooler. This benefits greatly from the lovely just left of square Winona Ryder (a favourite of mine) but also Garofalo and Steve Zahn.
I don't like Stiller here or in any of his other movies, but he gets some credit from me for directing this of-its-time teen film. Its the equivalent of John Hughes for the gen.x - sadly without the same quantity of humour.
Excellent use of My Sharona, though.
