Review of Reality Bites (1994) by Jennifer P — 24 May 2010
I think I have an unhealthy amount of nostalgia for this movie because, unlike Singles, I did watch it in its original era and I idolized Winona Ryder. When I watch it again today, I can admit honestly that Winona Ryder really can't act (maybe it's also because her character wasn't written that well; how can a valedictorian not be able to define irony? Was that in itself an attempt at humour?), and the tension between her and Ethan Hawke only feels genuine in a couple of scenes; but the romantic ideals I drew from it still resonate.
Having now experienced the late-20's postgrad disillusionment I can relate better to the situation rather than romanticizing it as I used to, and I can appreciate it for really capturing that 90's MTV pop culture mentality.
Still a good nostalgia trip.
