Review of Reality Bites (1994) by Bill E — 23 Nov 2010
"Got a pothead mama, got a coke head dad." Troy Dyer MEANT it, gang, and I'm here to tell you, I'm damn glad he did. I don't know if anyone here remembers grunge or the explosion of Generation X, but l do.
Cuz I WAS THERE. And it was f**king magical. The power of Dando. The charisma of Shannon Hoon, the moment when Dylan McKay told a generation to kiss his rich misunderstood ass. It was beautiful and I miss it all so much.
And that's why I cry my once hopeful eyes out every time I watch Reality Bites. Why? Because Troy Dyer meant it. He couldn't hold down a job and there was dignity in that. Lelaina Pierce was a hero BECAUSE she dared to use her dad's gas card to pay her phone bill.
It may not mean much now, but in 1994, this was revolutionary. And Steve Zahn had the balls to suddenly turn gay at the end, I almost forgot about that. So call me detached, call me ironic, call me unwilling to take a McJob, but don't call me not real, gang.
Because I was there. I was there. "Yeah, they come to snuff the rooster!" Give God the finger for me, Kurdt. I'll see ya soon, bro.
