Review of Real Women Have Curves (2002) by Latasia G — 09 Nov 2009
Title: Real Women, Don?t Give In.
Self confidence, and self respect, all falls upon Ana?s character. A great film based on a teenager facing general issues with her family. I personally believe that this maybe the best film I have seen thus far. Ana [America Ferrea] an 18 year old young lady that has dreams of going to college due to her teacher?s observations of great potential. However, her mother who is played by Lupe Ontiveros, had dreams of her working in her sister?s dress factory which is not very wealthy.
In the film Ana has issues with her mom and family. She has dreams of becoming a college student. However her family believes that she should work in the dress factory that her sister owns. Ana a very outspoken young women tell what she feels is right. Although her parents don?t believe that she knows what is best for her. Her mother puts her down constantly about her weight and says things that hurt Ana, but she never shows it. She says to her mother it?s more to me than my weight and body, what about my brains? Her mother seems as though she never knew the answer. Also her mother has this whole problem with virginity, Ana kind of rebelled and lost it to her boyfriend who supported her throughout everything she did. Ana did everything to ignore the stereo types that her mother put her in.
I suppose this film was the best. The actors were on point the suspicion it drew was great. However there was a tiny issue that I thought maybe they could have thought about. There were many things said is Spanish. If people don?t know a second language then they can?t understand what is being said. So maybe they could have included subtitles for others.
The background music was just fine. Everything fell in place. Also another thing I found was the lady singing in the beginning of the film. I?m not sure of the purpose.
The second aspect of film making that the director could have elaborated on is Ana?s her sister?s factory. They are getting paid $18.00 for a dress that is getting sold in a store for $600. While this issue exists in the film the director does not return to describe possible solutions for the situation. Maybe Patricia Cardoso director could have made it where the money they were getting paid increased. In addition it was the ending. I believe some things were left unsaid.
In the end a lot is learned while viewing this film. Mural is don?t let someone?s words defeat you and keep pushing for what you believe is right. This a great film for ages 13+. I would rate it a 5 star and a few words; A+ movie! A very fascinating.
