Review of Real Steel (2011) by Caleb W — 13 Dec 2015
My kids like this a lot. I like it too, but they like it more. They watch it enough that I'll give it 5 stars.
It's about robot fighting. It also has a good human story about second chances.
Young Max's mother dies, so the dad he never knew has one last chance to know him before he gets permanently placed with his aunt. Charlie is a selfish guy who needs to be taught some lessons; he starts learning those lessons, and things turn around.
Dad Charlie is into refurbishing used fighting robots and putting them into fights. A love of robot fighting is the one thing father and son seem to share. Along the way, Max finds his own used fighting robot and fixes it up, himself, with a little help from his dad's friend Bailley. This robot is all Max's, to fight and play with.
Working together to make Max's robot a winner brings father and son together onto the same team. Slowly, they start to feel like family. Heart-warming storyline, but what the kids like about it is robots smashing other robots.
