Review of Real Steel (2011) by Matt C — 26 Feb 2018
It's tempting to label this "Robot Wars" meets Rocky", and I guess it follows the middle Rocky films utter convention to formula and cliche. But the Sly film I'd most compare this to it "Over the Top" - a very similar character-based father/son reconciliation story set against rural/industrial backdrops and physical confrontations.
Yet "Real Steel" is better directed than "Over the Top", and a lot more interesting. For starters, an introductory scene features a robot vs BULL rumble. Awesome stuff. The film barely touches on humankind's disturbing lust for gladiatorial combat, and a potential near-future removal of actual human beings from physically taking part in such bloodfests.
But the premise is still intriguing, especially as Levy wisely situates the stunning robot CGI into real world settings. It's scarcely sci-fi at all, and the ever-reliable Jackman, the kid, and the support help to ground the cornball dialogue.
This might be a predictable, disposable, family-friendly Disney flick. But it's a good one. And one thing is does manage is the spiritual underdog uplifting vibe of Rocky's best fights.
