Review of Real Steel (2011) by C H — 28 Mar 2013
Considering the film pretty much looked like Rockem Sockem Robots the movie I was actually fairly impressed that it had a decent, if altogether not original, father/son plot to it. Hugh Jackman does well as a father who hasn't seen his kid for 11 years and begins to learn to connect with him through robot boxing, basically like Over the Top, just no arm wrestling.
His son (Goyo) is not as annoying as most plucky kids in a movie like this would be. The rest of the cast are just your average background characters that do not have too much bearing on the overall story; people like your basic "I owe him money" bad guy and the "I always loved you" lady.
Basically this movie took elements from Over the Top, Rocky, & the Rockem Sockem Robots game and put together a nice effects laden, fairly touching, and entertaining father/son flick. Nice job.
