Review of Real Steel (2011) by Cody S — 11 Feb 2013
I apologize for being a week late on my review, but I won't apologize for pretty much loving Real Steel. The movie's main ingredients are cheese and ham served to you with a shovel, and I couldn't have been more elated.
It's a father/son sports drama... with robots. What works for Real Steel is that it doesn't go the irritating tongue and cheek route, but rather a more realistic tone while being smart enough to realize that the whole premise is ridiculous.
Dumb audience members will think they're seeing the best sports drama since The Natural, and smart audiences will realize this is all in the name of dumb fun. The movie just works. I've never been a fan of Shawn Levy in the past, but he seemed a lot more comfortable in this genre.
Don't take Real Steel seriously, take it with a face full of popcorn lathered in butter and washed down with a gallon of soda.
