Perhaps it was reading the book, Ready Player One, first that caused me to find the film unengaging. Seeing the references and having them named on screen caused a winking at the audience that was not present in the book, perhaps because of the medium.
"I'm building an Iron Giant" WINK! "She's riding Kaneda's Bike.' WINK!
A someone who has a ridiculously deep/broad memory, reference based nostalgia is often very tedious when it is only about comforting nostalgia.
