Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Coolius F — 08 Apr 2018
So I really wanted to like this movie. I didn't hate and I didn't love it. Definitely not a multiple ticket movie. (Disclaimer, I haven't read the book so the plot was completely new to me).
I figured the oasis would have a lot of beautiful scenes in it along with fun 80's music and references. The 80's genre was on point but beautiful scenes were certainly missing. I felt like I was watching a Disney animated tv movie with the animation.
The animation was not fun. It felt very hyperactive and not focused. Another problem, lack of character development. The bad guy, wasn't really that bad or evil. The good characters didn't seem to have any flaws.
You weren't really emotionally invested in the characters so whatever happened to them didn't matter. Playing the game should have been really competitive and fun but all we got to see was the corporate employees playing the game and the main characters.
I don't know if this is a flaw in the book, but it makes the movie very uninteresting. How much competition can there be if you don't get to see anyone else playing the game? Couldn't get past the company headed by a slightly annoying not really evil honcho, trying to figure out the keys and clues the whole time.
Who cares? Not me. Doesn't matter. So not the best movie, not the worst movie, expected more from Spielberg. Not his greatest or most interesting venture. Oh well.
