Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Dt F — 08 Apr 2018
A huge disappointment from someone who enjoyed the book. The book itself is no masterpiece but it's entertaining and manages to walk that fine line between cringy and nostalgic. The film rushes past any attempt at a backstory, character development is non-existent and the visuals of the OASIS just feel "off".
Perhaps you can argue that some of the novel wouldn't translate into film, but this just felt almost like a children's film, and pays no reverence to the source material and the creative spirit that was behind early (or recent) videogame history. In the end it's the same adults that in the 80's told us that videogames are antisocial and a waste of time.
This film should've been made by someone who lived that era as a child. Spielberg just seems to completely miss the point, and I was desperate for the film to end. This message has virtually no redeeming qualities.
