Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Laurence C — 13 Apr 2018
A smorgasbord of cultural references, the novel must have been 'Generation X' for gamers. I'm sure the author was writing a detailed synopsis or treatment for a screen play. The film was enjoyable, the animation spectacular, the running time too long.
There's a big difference between watching a Battle royal to spawning into one, a friend fell asleep and lost the plot, another could only remember flashing lights the day after (like the residue of an alien abduction) .
Everyone thought Mendelsohn was a good villain, however the corny reaction witnessing generic hero holding the golden egg...um what was that, the recognition of the private elation a player feels after endgame, winning that massive boss fight, getting that rare achievement? Just shoot the tween, it was confusing, poorly directed, unclear and really corny.
Art3mis/Samantha (Olivia Cooke) said to generic hero 'you wouldn't like the way I look in real life' Huh? She's a total fox ,what was she Tinseltown's version of an ugly? She was more attractive than her avatar: pixie dream girl or boy (Art3mis kinda looked more like a boy or cute young lesbian).
Didn't you think Art3mis/Samantha seemed more than capable of being the hero rather then just a side kick? Aw well the book was penned by a dude and the sexual politics in the 80s was different, just look any Duran Duran MV .
PLEASE can we get passed 89, I'm kinda over everything 80's in dystopian futuristic sci-fi. Ok I know the novel was a geeky gambol's trip down memory lane but every cliche 80s track that's been done to death in recognition cinema give us a break.
I always judge a movie by what I'm left with the next day, sooo my day after rating is 4 stars, entertaining but corny, garbage really. What do you expect from the direct of E.T and Close Encounters; hey Spielberg of course reality is real, what do you think I am 13? Oh FYI and its not sitting in a swivel chair smooching a barely legal and getting a free pass into the wealthy 1% club; fade out.
