Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Viyan U — 14 Apr 2018

I wanted to see what the movie was all about. I had a hard time taking the book seriously and couldn't get into it. People who I know have good literary taste loved it, but it felt like passable fanfic. So, let's see if it played well as a popcorn movie.

No. The next time someone tells you that it's a great movie and enjoyable, tell them that you would rather watch the original Willy Wonka again. It was written much better and acted much better. The movie is a Nostalgia bomb. It's not even the best Nostalgia, it is the writers and even Steven Spielberg's ideas of what we should enjoy as far as Nostalgia goes. Nostalgia can be a black hole that we have to realize we have to separate ourselves from so a grande wide audience can enjoy an idea. Everything was extremely predictable, the visuals got to the point where I hated seeing a video game in front of me. I realize that I was falling into the trap when I cheered seeing a Gundam for all of 10 seconds of screen time. It felt like a modern-day version of one of the classic slapstick live action Disney movies except they are somewhat enjoyable still to this day. This was just kind of awful.
