In good movies, nostalgia should not be a plot device. In Ready Player One, it's the only plot device. The pop culture references fail to reflect their significance to the characters. The sad truth is that Voltron, Tracer, Mecha Godzilla, the Holy Hand Grenade, and the Iron Giant weren't animated by the people who made us love them.
They were animated to be bells and whistles. That soullessness a remake tend to evoke? A bar has been set. Way too high. Also, minus one million stars because of the virtual reality labor camp.
