Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Rhett W — 19 Apr 2018
"Ready Player One" is a fantastical, video-game inspired movie/world wherein you can escape reality, be anyone, and do anything in "The Oasis". It's the ultimate dream of most gamers, who love the real-life escape that a digital avatar/life can bring.
The movie is overflowing with easter eggs (ironically, but not surprisingly) and more cameos than you can shake a stick at (many analysts count 300+ references, as it were).
My overall take? It's a visual buffet with relatable themes, tons of action, a great soundtrack, and enough cameos to make even the casual or "once-was" gamers squeal in delight - even the Atari gamers or any fan of early pop culture.
As with any book-to-movie adaptation, it feels a bit rushed at times, especially in the hastily established "we've been friends for a long time" shtick, without any solid, prior development. And for all my biased love of video games, a lot of references and nuances may be lost on non-gamers... or those not born before 1980.
Bottom line is this: you'll enjoy this movie, whether you're an avid gamer and just want a plethora of cameos, are interested in a modern-era tale about technology vs. society, or just want something visually appealing to watch.

4/5 stars: definitely worth seeing in theaters.
