The novel was directed towards a particular audience and the movie is no different. It's fun to watch for any gamer, but especially if you're one born in the 80's. No movie is going to be as good or detailed as the book and it looks as though there was a compromise of certain events from the book that wouldn't make for very exciting scenes.
The movie has to make money and so they changed some things to appeal to a broader and younger audience. It's worth it to see if you're in the mood to relax with a goofy nerdy flick, but if you're someone who wants it to be as amazing as the story you've built in your head from the book then don't bother.
