Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Rattazustra — 28 Mar 2018
The movie as a whole as an enjoyable experience. It was funny and entertaining and I did not regret watching it.
However, the movie is also exceptionally parasitic. It feeds on content and pop culture created by far greater writers, visuals from significantly more competent designers and narrative from better authors. The world itself only carries the story the movie tells and it only manages to do so because the story is light and thin as a feather.
In my opinion it is a decent children's movie that is tailored to be easily watchable for adults. The visuals are quite good and the special effects blend well. It is, however, no masterpiece in no way whatsoever. It will sink below and beneath almost every cultural reference that it has exploited to boost itself with third party content.
