Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Mindglow — 28 Mar 2018
I haven't read the book. I'm a huge nerd and 80s/90s fan and I love Stranger Things (80s callbacks). All the references and nods in the movie got tiring by about halfway through, I thought. There is a story here but it's so cliché and predictable. The movie has good effects and some cool action scenes so it's entertaining enough but it never goes further than that because it plays it so safe.
What I don't understand is why there are so many critics and users giving video game movies bad rep because they are close to the source material (ie feels like a game) though I don't think I've seen another movie resembling a video game as much as this and it has quite a high score (no pun)? Is it because the name of the director, purely? Cause what this movie contains is as many references and easter eggs as there are stars in the sky and the story is as basic and "ticking the boxes" as it gets. It makes sure it doesn't step on any toes anywhere in the world and it doesn't dare to go outside the box.
