Review of Ready Player One (2018) by Hazzagalla — 28 Mar 2018
Ready Player One has a really fantastic first action sequence, and some really awesome visuals, but unfortunately, story wise, it is paper thin. Character conveniences at every turn, the real world performances are pretty ordinary and it doesn’t feel like a Spielberg movie at all.
Feels like during some scenes he got an intern to direct. Just really boring, flat direction at times. A lot of changes from the book, some for the good, others for the worse. Yes it has many references, moments you’ll recognise as nice visuals, but it's not a perfect movie just on those criteria.
As a structural narrative, it feels sloppy and so do some of the characters and performances. Repeat viewings would be interesting just to pick out references and Easter eggs, less about the actual story behind the film.
