Take away the orgy of nostalgia that this film throws at you and you are left with a very dumb action movie. The movie fails to introduce any sort of rules or boundaries that would normally make its world feel real, its characters relatable.

You can argue that its set in a video game where the only roadblock is a lack of imagination, but these facets are clearly absent in the movie's real world setting as well. A lack of any real consequences, both in game and out create a messy narrative that simply cannot get out of its own way.

If all you want in the movie is to see familiar video game and movie characters stomp around, then you will likely enjoy Ready Player One, but if you prefer a well written, engaging story then you're better off turning off the power immediately.
