Review of Ray (2004) by Ryan V — 01 May 2012
Ray Charles (Jamie Foxx) was a blind pianist who merged gospel, the blues, jazz, and popular showtunes into what eventually became soul music. This biopic chronicles his life story in both music and the civil rights movement.
However, the narrative doesn't shy away from depicting Charles' rampant infidelities and his struggles with heroin addiction. Jamie Foxx, who picked up an Oscar for this part, definitely adds humanity to the portrayal of an icon.
While Ray pretty much hits upon the same tropes as all other musical biopics, Foxx's strong performance makes this picture worthy of one's time.
