Review of Ravenous (1999) by Jer M — 25 Jul 2009
An atmospheric supernatural horror film based on a Native American myth iced with dark comedy and a glorious Michael Nyman/Damon Albarn score that is about as demented as can be. It is no surprise to hear of how badly this film did, box office-wise, back in the spring of '99 but I am glad I discovered it now...ten years later...
The performances are terrific, including underrated Tim Burton favorite Jeffrey Jones (Pedophilia, be damned!) and Scottish character actor Robert Carlyle and the eternally excellent and odd Guy Pearce in the lead role. The cinematography is beautiful, fully engaging your senses into this snowy abyss of death caked with blood and human flesh. But my mind keeps going back to that score...with its crazed Pomp and looped Circumstance...that sounds like a psychotic duel fought in the streets between banjos and strings and old archival loops. This movie is worth seeing for the score alone and even if the ending is a little too conventional for what had gone on before, it is nonetheless absorbing and very very different.
