Review of Ravenous (1999) by Stephen E — 18 Aug 2012
What makes "Ravenous" such a truly unforgettable film is its macabre sense of humor and unsettling atmosphere. It's uneven in just about every aspect (i.e. its tone, pace, characters, etc.
), but it's uneven in an interesting way. It's just about one of the most offbeat films I've ever seen. Guy Pearce remains serious throughout most of the film, but the rest of the cast is eccentric and strange.
(Robert Carlyle has a chilling performance.) As well, the film is well-directed and terrifically shot, taking advantage of some beautiful scenery. The score is decidedly unique, but I feel as though it makes some of the more horrific scenes more humorous than scary, which seems entirely intentional.
The climax is somewhat predictable and routinely gory, but I'll say this: no film has me feel sicker to my stomach than "Ravenous" has.
