Review of Ratchet & Clank (2016) by James E — 29 Apr 2016
"Honestly this may be the most faithful adaptation of a video game movie I've seen. Many of the original voice actors returned along with a couple writers and developers from the game. Clearly a lot of heart was put into this.
So that means the critics were wrong? Right?............well.....No. Not really. It's enjoyable enough if you're a fan of the franchise. (Although even then it's still flawed.) If you're not a fan, it's just kind of awkwardly paced, the references will fly above your head, the voice work is surprisingly excellent (though hardly any of the celebrity voices were necessary in the slightest), and it's pretty much a basic plot.
Not that basic is really a bad thing. It's just........This should of worked. Worked on a higher level than other video game adaptations. It's easily one of the best. By far. But even then, when "Prince of Persia" and "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" are still as good as we're going to get, it makes me sad.
The post credits scene is awesome..... But it doesn't help the fact my enthusiasm for "Assassins Creed", "The Angry Birds Movie", or even "Warcraft" has pretty much vanished.
If this one couldn't work, what gives me reason to believe any of the others will?".
