Review of Ratchet & Clank (2016) by Ryan A — 29 Apr 2016
Based off the original Ratchet & Clank games from the Playstation 2, this movie is an attempted reboot for this odd duo. Of course, for those who have played the game, the feeling of a comedic action-packed adventure is pretty much what you'd expect from a movie with these two; however, the action is is thoroughly lacking compared to its original incarnations. The comedy is there, that is definite, but the movie skips over what fans of Ratchet & Clank love: the lombax and "defective" warbot on an adventure using a large arsenal of weapons! For most of the movie, these weapons are rarely used by our heroes and the adventure is just Ratchet trying to fit in as a Ranger, making it feel like their characters are quite downplayed as simple rookies who have no skills at all.
Some would seem it unfair to compare a movie to a video game, which is fine; however, the characters cannot be properly portrayed if their capabilities are taken away from them. Even with the video games aside, the writing is subpar or even stale in most places, a few errors in continuity are easily seen, and the actions in some places just seem forced.
If you wish to see this movie, Captain Quirk and the villains probably have the best lines in this movie. Heck, if you prefer the old games compared to this, you're in luck: there is a video game based off this movie as a reboot from the originals and it plays just like you remember from the series.
