Review of Ratchet & Clank (2016) by Ammon J — 30 Apr 2016

So I never played any of the Ratchet and Clank games growing up but I have heard of little bits of information about the characters and story and everything so I wasn't super hyped for this movie or feeling all nostalgic while watching it.

However my friend that came along with me played almost all of the Ratchet and Clank games so she basically helped fill me in on all the references and little Easter eggs that the movie made towards the game.

The first thing I wanna talk about is the voice acting. The voice acting is phenomenal, each actor does a great job at playing their character especially the actors for Ratchet and Clank which help to make the characters both act just like they did in the game series.

The story is a very paper thin and basic story. A character wants to do something better with their life and wants to become bigger and famous, they then become big and go on an adventure battling an evil enemy who they then defeat and the universe is safe again.

Just like Star Wars except Star Wars did it better. The humor is also a downgrade from the games. While the games had a great sense of humor with some adult jokes like "up your arsenal" and many other jokes as my friend told me, in the movie some the jokes are childish and some are actually well planned out and reference the older games.

The references and Easter eggs that were made to the games that my friend pointed out to me were actually pretty well put and well played out in the right moments. The animation is very good as well, it looks exactly like a video game cutscene stretched into a hour and a half movie which helped it to look more like a video game and it was very smooth and nice looking.

Overall Ratchet and Clank is in no means a bad film and it's also not an amazing movie. I respect the effort that was put into the movie and all the effort put into it to make it exactly like the games with the references and everything, but I can't help but feel like it came up short and was not as good as It could've been.

But since there were a lot of things I liked in it and a lot of things I didn't like in it I'm gonna give it a 3/5.
