Review of Ratchet & Clank (2016) by Orlando O — 14 Sep 2016

Ratchet and Clank use to be a fun, adventurous and cute playstation game that spawned many sequels and a reboot that is following up with this movie. A movie could have been a great idea, if it had the right humor, adventurous tone, and colorful animation.

Which is what this film has failed to do. Kids may enjoy the movie for what it is, but the direction and animation is so dull. The movie is not as fun, on what it could have been so much more for these characters.

Only thing they got right, is keeping a couple of voice actors that portrayed Ratchet and Clank from the game. Even the screenwriters, who supposedly are writers for the reboot game, also did the movie and failed to capture the adventurous family animation.

Sure, following a story from the game would not make much of a difference, with just adding a quirky villain on wanting to destroy planets to build his own great planet. And a team of space rangers like Captain Qwark, Cora, Elaris, Brax, Ratchet and Clank are trying to stop the evil villain Blarg.

There is really no fun to be had with the animation, which makes it quite disappointing. Especially, they have distinct different characters and they are all forgettable. The animation is dull which it could have been more detailed with there design.

The action is quite boring, when it could have been adventurous with these characters trying to work together. Seeing the Lombax Ratchet meeting with Clank an escaped warbot for the first time was a nice introduction.

These characters do not offer any thing more in the movie besides sharing screen time. Video games being made into movies are a nice opportunity for Hollywood to expand with adaptations. As long as they can try to make it entertaining and worth something to see.

Ratchet and Clank could have turned out to be a fun family film, if the script and humor was improved and had creative colorful animation to make these characters stand out. For this movie with a low budget, does show the amount of work put into the project that does make the movie a miss in being something.

Ratchet and Clank is best to enjoyed as a game, sure kids may enjoy the movie while the adults will find it to be a snooze fest.
