Review of Ratatouille (2007) by Michael P — 10 May 2013
Ideally I'd give it 4 1/4. I think my problem with this film is there are some areas it's REALLY good at; some of Pixar's finest. But then there are other crucial areas it's ok or not so great with; I'll start with the ok/bad.
They put a LOT of emphasis on Linguini and he's not interesting. He's just a bumbling comic relief that we've seen many-a times. The villain is a little above ok. The rat family are ok. You might think what's wrong with that? But the problem is they had some really good stuff in this film.
Like the side character chefs, they had some really interesting back stories and I wanted to learn more about them. The critic is amazing, the design, the voice (Peter O'Toole's voice as a matter of fact) really top notch.
Remy is pretty interesting for a protagonist. It was a very cool idea to have those hallucination talks with Gusteau.
