Review of Rat Race (2001) by Adam S — 19 Jul 2012
Before I start this review, I'm going to point out that this was the first M-rated film (usuing Australian ratings here) my mother let me and my brother watch. So when I first saw this, it was all new to me. The raunchiness, the pushing of boundaries that doesn't happen in PG flicks.
In any case, nostalgia or not, I always enjoy watching Rat Race. The cast has lost some of it's all star flavour, but any movie featuring Rowan Atkinson, John Cleese and Whoopi Goldberg, with the likes of Seth Green, Cuba Gooding Jr and Wayne Knight in supporting roles is still fairly impressive.
Most characters don't have time to grow, and in that sense it's very much a flawed film. Rowan Atkinson probably gave the best performance, and he was sadly given the most one-dimensional, yet somehow still superbly memorable character in the whole movie.
The gags were decent, I thought. The scenes where the punters are betting on things such as first to vomit on the plane, the price of a hooker and which maid will fall from the railings first reeked of John Cleese's experience, and had a distinct taste of Monty Python's Flying Circus.
A fun movie, with it's rating boosted by my personal nostalgia.
