Review of Rashomon (1950) by Sylvia Q — 21 Nov 2009
Rashomon had always been a movie that intrigued me whenever I read about any reference of it concerning a tale of differing views. Critics have it that it is one of the best movies in the film history.
Made in the 1950s, it is probably the predecessor of all thrillers or detective stories. Its plot is supposedly interesting with an air of suspense. Though I agree that the cinematography, complimented by a fantastic soundtrack building up the right mood, is uniquely stylish for its time, I find the film a little dull, weird and repetitive.
Even the ending appears to be abruptly inconsistent to me. Perhaps I should learn not to watch an old film with my modern eyes. Neither should I hold too high an expectation before viewing a so-called masterpiece.
