Review of Rashomon (1950) by Kaewta K — 21 Jun 2010
The main reason I am giving this film 4 stars is for the technical brilliance that Kurosawa and his team had with the cinematography and considering the technology they had at that time...The problem with watching this film is that several movies such as Hoodwinked and books like Walk in the Park have copied the Rashmon effect (versions of the same story from diff characters) and added even more value to it over time.
..So this film pales in comparison to those...Credit must be given to a cast which relevant to that time, gave over-dramatic portrayal of characters...Mifune grows on you as the Bandit whilst you might get turned off by Machiko's constant whining in the film.
..Typical of Kurosawa's films, he makes sure you get the morale of the story through a medium - a monk who has 'almost lost his trust in man'...
