Review of Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) by Sir Kyl C — 22 Dec 2010
'Twas the night before Christmas... in Finland... speaking English and Finnish... Adverts and trailers for this film make it look like BAD SANTA part 2... It isn't. The problem is, this film is so incredibly original, no one quite knows how to sell it.
Told from the perspective of a child forced into a too adult life, the film uses the backdrop of a modern frontier family in the artic circle to present a mystery and morality tale in one. The film is creepy without being bloody. It is comical in a way that makes you a bit uneasy laughing.
Like a Neil Gaiman mystery, it challenges the beliefs about what we think we know about reality. It takes our modern mythology and turns it on us like a rampaging pet monkey. When the attack is over, we never quite wil see the world the same again.
In short, this film is brilliant. Epic. Creepy. Disturbing. Brilliant.
