Review of Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) by Robert H — 29 Dec 2010
This interesting take on Santa should have made for a great killer/evil Santa film except it has one big flaw, it seems to have been made for kids (well, older kids at least). Despite the couple of kills and a ton of old man genitals, this film is just too wishy washy to make it into my recommended viewing list and seems to be geared towards a tween crowd.
Had they added up to 20 minutes of kills, suspense and the like, to expand on the "evil" Santa aspect of the film, I'd be recommending it to everyone I know. As it is, it just comes across as a good idea that doesn't deliver the goods.
All this is very disappointing as the first 3/4 of the film are really good. Part of the problem from the film is that it's a little hard to put into any one or two genres. It's not quite for kids, it's not a suspense film, it's not a horror film, and it's barely a comedy. Luckily it is a Christmas movie cause if it didn't have that going for it... I don't think it would have enough to stand on.
