Review of Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) by Brian S — 17 Jun 2011
Well, it's certainly unique. it has a lot going on. it's not quite a horror movie, but it's extremely dark and actually quite creepy in a lot of places. considering the villains of the story are Santa and his elves, there's also a bit of black comedy--the treatment of subject matter is so beyond our concept of normal that you can't help find it a bit funny.
the relationship between Pietari and his father also makes for some subtle family drama. other story elements flirt with action and thriller genres, too. I don't really know what to think about this movie.
it's so strangely engaging and eerily bizarre. and the ending...it would be a very clever ending to a light-hearted Christmas movie, but having seen everything that came before it, perspective gets skewed.
this movie is weird and different and I liked it.
