Review of Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) by Brandon L — 25 Dec 2011
For people like me, who hate the typical family-friendly Christmas films, RARE EXPORTS will easily find it's place as one of your new favorite holiday movies.
Telling much about the plot would spoil the fun surprises in RARE EXPORTS, but I will say it answers the question - If Santa was real, would he be an asshole?
To me, this movie played out like a classic 80's Spielberg film. Family dynamics, kids in peril, keeping the monster hidden from the audience - you know these tropes. Apparently attempting to recapture the magic of films like E.T. and GREMLINS is in vogue this year, but unlike SUPER 8, this film doesn't have massive plot holes and a confounded ending. The end of this film, literally made me laugh out loud with excitement.
RARE EXPORTS is tightly written and amazing shot, and it's going to be a film I revisit every year when the holiday season approaches.
One last thing - the film is in Finnish. So for all you dummies who don't read no good, you might want to wait until they eventually remake this film in English.
