Review of Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) by Marilena G — 24 Dec 2012
This has become my new Christmas tradition. It's a hoot. It's beautifully filmed, and has just the right touches of horror and humor. All of the Finnish Christmas traditions are here - Korvatunturi Mountain, the Sami legend, the yearly "visitation" by Santa Claus (as Piiparinen was preparing to do), and don't forget those handy gingerbread cookies! Some have said the acting is "hammy", but I think it's absolutely perfect, and I love the little homages to American hero-adventure movies.
Don't read too much about it before you see it - instead, just enjoy the unexpected gems and plot twists. Although dressed as a dark horror film, it's so cleverly done you can't help but laugh and congratulate the writer-director for a great Christmas ride.
