Review of Rango (2011) by James S — 18 Feb 2014
This charming tale of a young chameleon; as he strives to prove that life surpasses merely living in a glass box, is a fantastic, entertaining watch. Representing what many people want from life, in the sense of adventure and companionship, it does a great job of engaging the audience. At first our leading man may appear just an "ugly chameleon", however Johnny Depp portrays the character and voice of Rango superbly, demonstrating the various emotions that the courageous amphibian encounters, whilst ensuring genuine humor runs throughout. The array of other desert creatures compliments our central character perfectly, providing distinctly different personalities. Whilst the story line is often predictable (directly similar to that of Shark Tale), it remains entertaining, although the primary reason for this engagement may in fact be the eager anticipation of Rango's next joke. The opening scene in particular, whilst introducing our character, throws multiple comic scenes at the viewer, which one cannot help but laugh at.
An example of animated genius, stunning visuals and genuine laugh out loud comedy make Rango a must watch for the whole family. It is no surprise that multiple awards were scooped up, as I am already excited to witness the journey of our loveable chameleon once again.
