Review of Rango (2011) by The Panda — 08 Jul 2012
It winning best animated picture of the year last year gave me some slightly high expectations, and I will say I was not disappointed.
Plot.
While the plot was not a big emotional investment, it did make me think, and sadly on my behalf caught me off guard for not seeing something coming, that was really cleverly foreshadowed. There were a few laughs and such from me at different parts, there may have been more if I didn't watch it at 10:00 pm, and it was quite enjoyable and was interesting enough to keep me watching. It was interesting, engaging, and kept you interested in seeing what was going to happen to the little green lizard in all the situations he got himself caught into. 7.9/10.
Characters and Performances.
In the movie Rango, the only character I really saw get any development was well, Rango. Now Rango himself was a very clever character, and as a thespian I found him extremely likable, and relate able to. He worked perfectly as an all bark no bite sort of guy, and not only that it was believable due to the background you received in the first bit of the film, it made his act very believable that he would be able to pull it off. I liked seeing his character grow, but it's quite clear the only character you will end up caring about in this film is Rango. You don't care about the town, you don't care about the little romance, they are all just there to help pull Rango's story along. If I only counted Rango 8.7/10, however the entire cast 5.8/10.
Sound and Visuals.
The western desert atmosphere was perfectly captured in the film, with the music, and barren land, it really looked and sounded like a land quenched of water. The music blended well and the visuals were done very well. Nothing here put me in awe in how good it looked or sounded, but didn't need to because anything more than it was would have broken the suspension of disbelief. So there is nothing to be amazed about, yet nothing to complain about either. 7.4/10.
Overall.
It was a film that really seized your attention start from finish which is a lot to say about a film. The plot was very clever and unique, especially for an animated film, and was foreshadowed nicely. Although you couldn't care less about the non-lead characters, Rango was acted and written greatly, and was a very nice character. The visuals and sound really did create the environment, and nothing about the film blew me away, it simply didn't have to, it was subtly genius. 8.2/10 for Rango.
