Review of Ran (1985) by Mark B — 23 May 2010
Great to finally see a Kurosawa film in color. The Shakespearean story told in Japanese feudal system was seamlessly done, at times I forgot it wasn't an original story. The Jester playing the role of the fates for the audience in the film was very useful and informative of the madness the Daimyo suffered.
The battle at the third castle was amazing. Entering the battle late seeing only the aftermath of the destruction and the removal of all sound except the soundtrack, created a dismal hellish atmosphere.
Brining across the true chaos and destruction of war. It is as innovative as when Kurosawa invented the slow motion death in Seven Samurai. As the film went on the hell of war became worse and worse. Ending with almost every character dead, and a final image of the Lord Buddha.
Kurosawa presents a powerful message in a beautiful thought provoking way.
