Review of Ran (1985) by Christopher M — 19 May 2008
Kurosawa's somewhat loose adaptation of Lear nevertheless excels as a good illustration of the way film is capable of picking out the symbiotic relationships that govern the existential; the spatial and the temporal, space and movement.
The great battle scenes linger long as rare artistic metaphors on the nib of a master painter. The almost perfect symbiosis of sight and sound is balanced by the sumptuous radiance of colour and costume.
A marvellous cinematic experience that remains as freshly inspirational today as it did at the time of the shoot. Compelling viewing.
