Review of Ran (1985) by Alec B — 23 May 2008
Hugely ambitious and dreamlike reimagining of Shakespeare's "King Lear" set in feudal Japan. Surrealistic imagery and understated - yet epic - staging overshadows a lot of the pacing and steam of the film, but Kurosawa's eerie use of bright colors, Kabuki-inspired makeup, a sparse soundtrack and haunting, wind-swept cinematography makes for an unforgettable experience.
Long, slow and a little too understated, but indulgently toothsome for fans of "cinema".
