Review of Ran (1985) by Dan G — 13 Oct 2008
Another Kurosawa Shakespeare tragedy retold (this time "King Lear") with fantastic battle scenes. It may start a tiny bit slow but delivers in spades at the end. The film is beautifully photographed too with great use of costumes, makeup, light and location.
Acting is full on Japanish No-theatre which surprisingly works for this film. The music also has to be mentioned which is minimalistic but very effective. Of the characters it's impossible to forget the manipulative and seductive she-fox Lady Kaede.
