Review of Ran (1985) by Andrew N — 06 Nov 2008
Far more than a "version" of LEAR, Kurosawa's RAN is a masterpiece in it's own right. Departing from naturalistic acting and inventing cinematic techniques that would become film essentials, RAN is a nihilistic roller coaster and one hell of a film.
Lady Kaede alone steals the show, but also look for the Hell's Picture Scroll and the final image of the young blind lord on the precipice... breathtaking.
