Review of Ran (1985) by Jackie P — 17 Mar 2009
Some of my favorite aspects of this film are the use of color, makeup, and costuming--the visuals. This is particularly marvelous, considering how many of Kurosawa's films are in black and white.
For color, some of my favorite moments are how he arranged the colors of the wardrobe in the beginning, with the Court and his sons. Additionally, I love the monochrome touches that dominate the screen during the battle and burning of the castle, and how the blood is given a subtle orange hue that makes it POP like neon.
Make up-wise, I really love the influences of Noh theatre that are seen. For example, on Kidetora/Lear's face as the film progresses. Very cool stuff, there. The costuming in the film as a whole speaks for itself. I found out after watching the film about what extent Kurosawa and his costuming team went, and it totally deserved recognition.
Even better is that the story and elements of the film that are decidedly NOT visual compliment the stunning visual elements perfectly. He was a fabulous director.
