Review of Ran (1985) by Bob G — 19 Jun 2009
If you look up 'Epic' in the dictionary, Ran should be included in the definition. Probably one of the most beautifully filmed movies. No special effects, little editing. Many scenes (such as the burning of the castle) had to be filmed in only one take. All the actors had to be at the top of their game, all together, on cue.
Shakespear's King Lear (and a scary Lady Macbeth) with the Japanese Bushido Code.
The Japanese Nor form of acting (frozen expressions punctuated by sudden movement) takes some getting used to.
