Review of Ran (1985) by David S — 02 Oct 2009
Ran is like gong to the symphony, visiting a world-class art museum, watching Shakespeare at the theater, and going to the movies all at once. In short, this film is basically all fine cultural pursuits wrapped into one.
I'm going to make a bold statement: Not only is this my favorite Kurosawa film (but, oh, Yojimbo is close!) but I also think this is the best movie I've ever seen. The colors and cinematography are glorious (especially during the battle of the Third Castle. I ask you to find a better sequence in any film). I love it so much, I want to have this movie's lovechild.
