Review of Ran (1985) by Jake W — 19 Nov 2009
Although considered Akira Kurosawa's late life masterpiece, I wasn't as enthralled like I was whenever I first saw Rashomon. However, the imagery and use of bright color was beautiful. The acting by the cast blew my mind and the film sequences are some of the greatest captured on film. Also, this is probably is the best adaptation of Shakespeare on film.
Then why would I have not given this a five star rating than a four? The movie was drawn out way, way too long and condensed a little more. The film also had long periods of stillness and silence that felt boring and non-essential to the plot. This being said, Ran is great in story, acting, imagery, but as far as pace...terrible.
