Review of Ran (1985) by Akira H — 14 Feb 2010
Another Kurosawa work checked at a theater in lower west side. The theater was running "Kurosawa Month" and they picked this title as "the" last one, with the exception of "Fortnight Special!" The timing I dropped by was Saturday early evening show but I was surprised by the fact that the placed was packed!
My samurai movie definition was, of course, Mifune & Kurosawa but my recent pick, "Yojimbo", gave me an insight of the late commer, Tatsuya Nakadai, who was playing a role of a villain with a gun. People who were at the theater knew much about him already and I was the person who was educated about the fact Nakadai is the actor who won more international awards than ones Mifune did.
The lines were filled with deep philosophical thoughts and no wonder this was based on Shakespeare's work with the fact that this isn't the only roll he shot based on those.
People's reactions at the theater were also interesting. There were a lady who keep laughing at serious scenes. Another guy said "very funny" at a certain scene where it wasn't at all for me. But good thing is there are many people in this town who love Kurosawa works, just like I do. I should have more conversations with those people.
