Review of Ran (1985) by Kevin K — 23 Feb 2010
Kurosawa made two timeless masterpieces in his career. The first, "Seven Samurai" was made in the earlier days of his career. The second, "Ran" was made towards the end. The two films, while both epic in scope, could not be more different.
"Seven Samurai" is life affirming and inspiring, while "Ran" is incredibly bloody and nihilistic. In fact, it's the darkest film in Kurosawa's resume'. It's also a masterful adaptation of Shakespeare's "King Lear".
The film is a technical marvel, with stunning battle sequences and gorgeous cinematography. The poetically bleak and bloody castle massacre around the middle of the film is rightfully iconic. Kurosawa is a god among directors for a reason.
