Review of Ran (1985) by Lester Y — 27 Feb 2010
I saw this film twenty years ago, before I watched foreign films, before I watched anything with subtitles, before I watched period dramas. Honestly, I can't even remember why I started watching it.
But I loved it then and I still love it now. Thinking back, it might even be the film that persuaded me that movies didn't have to be in English. It's got a good story, a wonderfully evil villain, interesting characters, massive battle scenes filmed long before CGI made it easier and it remains one of the best Shakespeare adaptions I've ever seen.
It's really long and the jester character is really annoying but its strengths far outnumber its weaknesses. I hope I don't wait another two decades before seeing it again.
